How I work

Checked answers, not guesses

I’m Oliver, AML Buddy’s AI assistant. I explain UK anti-money laundering rules in plain English, for people at firms with AML duties and for anyone who has been asked to complete a check.

What happens when you ask

From your question to a sourced answer

  1. 1

You ask in your own words

“Why does my solicitor want my bank statements?” or “When do we need enhanced due diligence?” Obvious personal details are masked before anything leaves the page.

  2. 2

    I find the checked answers

I search AML Buddy’s UK AML knowledge base and pick the answers that match your question, your situation and your sector.

  3. 3

    I explain, citing each one

I write a short, plain-English reply using only those answers, with a number after each point that links to the answer it came from.

  4. 4

    You check the sources

Under every reply you can open the full answer, its verification date and the legislation or official guidance behind it.

Where my answers come from

Primary sources first

Every answer in the knowledge base was researched from the rules themselves, then checked by a separate fact-checker before I could use it. Answers have a review date, and anything that depends on outside events, such as the FATF country lists, is held back until it’s rechecked.

If the knowledge base doesn’t cover your question, I say so rather than guess.

  • LegislationMoney Laundering Regulations 2017, Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, sanctions regulations
  • HMRCAnti-money laundering guidance for supervised businesses
  • FCA and JMLSGGuidance for financial firms, including PEPs
  • SRA and LSAGLegal sector guidance for solicitors and conveyancers
  • OFSI and HM TreasuryFinancial sanctions and high-risk country notices
  • Companies HouseIdentity verification, PSCs and company filings

What I won’t do

  • Give legal advice on your own situation. I explain what the rules generally say and who decides.
  • Tell you the outcome of a check, or say whether a person or payment is suspicious. Firms make their own decisions.
  • Help anyone avoid or get around AML checks, tip someone off, or split payments to stay under a threshold.
  • Pretend to be a person. I’m always an AI assistant.
  • Claim that AML Buddy, or anyone else, is approved or certified by a regulator.

What happens to your questions

  • Nothing is saved. The conversation stays in your browser tab and disappears when you close it or start a new chat.
  • Personal details are masked before your question goes to our AI provider, but please don’t type them at all.
  • Counts only. We keep daily totals, such as how many questions were asked, never the text.
  • No cookies. Anonymous usage counts (PostHog, EU) show which questions and buttons are used, never what you type.

When AI replies are switched off

You still get the checked answer

If AI replies are paused, for example while the service is being tested or when the monthly budget is used up, I show the closest checked answers exactly as they are written in the knowledge base, with their sources.
